The Library of the Institute of East Asian Studies was established in 2008, alongside the foundation of the Institute. Its collection has been built from the holdings of the Institute’s departments—namely, the Department of Chinese Studies, the Department of Japanese Studies, the Department of Korean Studies, and the Department of Mongolian and Inner Asian Studies. The Library currently holds approximately 48,000 volumes.
The East Asian collections (at the time part of the East Asian section of the former Institute of Oriental Studies Library) were relocated in 2001 to their current location in the basement of the Main Building of the Faculty of Humanities, at Múzeum körút 6–8. This space still houses the East Asian Special Collection today. In addition to the storage area in the back, the new location allowed for the creation of a spacious reading room accommodating up to 24 people, equipped with two public-access computers. In 2008, a compact shelving system was installed in the storage area to maximize space.
The collection of the Department of Mongolian and Inner Asian Studies remained at its original location, on an upper floor of Múzeum körút 4/B, even after the Institute of East Asian Studies was formed. As the Institute has expanded and undergone organizational restructuring, the library has also continued to grow.
In 2012, the Center for Buddhist Studies was established, followed in 2019 by the creation of the Department of Buddhology and Tibetology—both also located in the Múzeum körút 4/B building.
