Welcome to the website of the Institute of East Asian Studies at ELTE Faculty of Humanities!
The Institute of East Asian Studies is the only institute in Hungary specialized in the teaching and research of East Asian languages and cultures. Its predecessor, the East Asian Institute, was founded in 1924 under the leadership of Professor Vilmos Pröhle. Due to the growing interest in modern East Asian languages and cultures, in 2008, the East Asian programs were separated from the Institute of Oriental Studies, and the Institute of East Asian Studies was established.
The primary objective of the Institute's BA programs is to provide students with a high level of proficiency in one of the East Asian languages (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Mongolian, Tibetan), while simultaneously fostering their understanding of East Asian cultures. The knowledge acquired through these programs significantly enhances students' employability in institutions or companies that require proficiency in one of the modern East Asian languages and familiarity with East Asian cultures. For those interested in academic research, the Institute's MA and PhD programs offer opportunities to further deepen their knowledge base, guided by internationally renowned faculty, in the exploration of East Asian languages and cultures.
